Who are we?

SGS Russian/CIS Certification is a service division of the SGS Group – the global leader and innovator in inspection, verification, testing and certification services. With over 43'000 employees, SGS operates a network of almost 1’000 offices and laboratories around the world.

The core activity of SGS Russian/CIS Certification is, through the SGS subsidiaries, to assist our Clients in obtaining certificates and other permissive documents required by local regulations and/or local customers. Our division’s mission is to facilitate international trade and investments and to enable our Clients to develop business with Russia and other CIS countries.

Developing along with our Clients

On July 14th, 1993 SGS was accredited by Gosstandart of Russia (former name for the Federal Agency on the Technical Regulation and Metrology) to provide GOST R certification services. It is notable that SGS has been the very first international player admitted into the Russian certification market. Our initial accreditation scope included all major product categories exported to Russia at that time, namely foodstuff, cosmetics, toys, textile, FMCG, machinery, E&E. To support our activity of issuing GOST R Certificates of Conformity, we have been operating a number of laboratories properly accredited by Russian authorities in Europe and Asia to carry out tests and evaluate whether exported goods comply with Russian standards.

Since then, we have been constantly adapting our capabilities to our Clients’ needs and investing into our own development along with our Clients’ development.

There has been a significant shift in the Russian import structure from consumables to industrial products in late 1990s - early 2000s. Therefore, in December 2003, we extended our GOST R accreditation to include a wider range of machinery goods. Moreover, apart from GOST R certification system, we have been also providing assistance in obtaining other permits necessary to sell or to use products in the Russian territory such as Hygienic Conclusions, Declarations of Conformity, RTN (ex GGTN) Permits to Use, Fire Safety Certificates, Explosion Proof Certificates, Telecom Type Approval Certificates and others. To identify the type of approval you need doing business in Russia – see ‘Certification & licensing’ section.

Moreover, supply to Russia of just several pieces of machinery has been gradually turning into export of complete factories, which implies higher complexity of the export process with regard to project logistics and coordination with various local authorities. In this connection, for the last few years our Clients have been benefiting from our Project Management solutions, empowered by the SGS Group’s widest range of competencies. Thus, industrial investors/suppliers take advantage of such services as Vendor Surveillance, Quality Assurance & Quality Control, On-Site & Pre-Shipment Inspection that are naturally complementing Russian Certification.

Answering the ever increasing interest of our Clients towards other CIS countries, such as Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus and elsewhere, which have got their own product certification systems (though much similar to the Russian ones), SGS has recently started to provide concurrent services enabling international players to enter those emerging markets.

Our key services as mentioned above are accompanied by auxiliary activities:

  • As a part of Advisory Services we will discuss and offer you the best certification schedule reflecting your needs and will help you to find the solution on how to comply with Russian regulations in the most rational way.

  • We are regularly organising Training Workshops regarding Russian certification where we explain international exporters which problems they might encounter trading with Russia and procedures they should follow.

  • And, since many documents required by Russian authorities should be written in Russian language, we provide our Clients with Translation Services from practically any language.
